The news came 2 weeks ago but myself just got to know two days ago.(and maybe deniz who just arrived as well) I dont know what ideas the landlord might have (too many complains from the neighbours, cops coming in the middle of parties etc etc), the point is, we have one month left! The purpose of this email is to find a place (a roof with four walls that will protect me from the rain and the "pinches" mosquitoes will work for me.
(...)

That's how I learned of the tragedy, and though I'm quite happy that I am not there anymore, being in the same situation Cesar is (was, hopefully - since he send the mail on July 2nd and should have a roof over his sombrero by now), I still feel mightily sad! Robertson House was a unique experience for me and countless other trainees.

We hoped that the (mostly muslim) neigbours will gradually get used to the internationality of "our" house over time. It's not that we were Gomorrah incarnate or something like that. Heck, we weren't even louder than them! Try to imagine five year old kids firing crackers for days on end, starting around 6:00 a.m. - even on weekends, or drunken teens (yep, we're talking about a muslim neighbourhood here!) screaming their voices raw until some cops come by and end the "music", or... well, let's just say there were some other sources of loudness as well.

The thing that disturbed them most and which was the real reason for rejecting us was that "children" (in their eyes, being in your twenties doesn't make you an adult) lived there without their parents and - gasp! - sometimes even boys and girls together! That's why the landlord had taken no new girls in when female trainees left, and after a few months Robertson House became a "boys only" house. Which, of course, didn't stop us to invite female trainees from the neighbouring trainee houses (where "mixed gender" was absolutely no issue, even though it was in the same muslim part of Bangalore) to parties from time to time. But those Parties ended up being a new reason for our neighbours to complain: noise after dark in the street, etc...

The landlord banned parties, we obeyed, but still... from time to time, females were seen entering our houses. It didn't matter that it was during day (or early evening) and that they were only here to plan a weekend trip (which was done regularly by whoever wanted to join, male or female). I guess rumors were stronger than "intercultural tolerance", and in the end, the landlord seemed to have given in. I can't blame him: estate prices are exploding, so he'll make some bucks I guess.

I only hope that there will be a new "Robertson House" somewhere in Bangalore!

(1) I guess some Indians are even worse, but definitely there's no other biker from Mexico who's THAT crazy).

For all who were there together with me, visit my blog (adelsberg.nomadlife.org), where you'll find some shared memories of the great times we had there.

Since nobody seems to contribute anymore, I hereby close this blog.

Sinterklaas celebration at the Robertson House

Ok guys...
being Dutch, the first week of december is always something special.. Maybe some of you cultural sensitive foreigners know what's it about: Sinterklaas! It is a traditional Dutch celebration, which is done with a group of people. No, it's not something gang-bang like, but instead we exchange presents (instead of fluids) and poems which effectively mock the person who's on the receiving end, or tells something about the present.
It works like this: we gather, make a little paper with our name om it, throw them in a basket and everyone gets a name, you will not tell anyone which name you have. Although it's af course fun to try and find out..

UPDATE:
We will do this part with use of the website:
www.sinterklaaslootjes.nl

We all go downtown to find some stupid, crazy, fun or practical present, of let's say 100Rps? pack it, write a small poem between 50 and 600 words and let the fun part begin..

Btw, the story behind Sinterklaas (which later is called Santa Claus by the Americans; again another Dutch Great Invention (French modus)) is of a holy man (from Turkey for godsake) who lives in Spain and once a year comes with his Steamboat full of presents to the Netherlands, he is accompanied by his black-homies in robin hood-like tights who carry large bags with presents, but if you have been naughty they will put you in the bag and take you back to Spain..

Ah well... Send me an email at meelmaar (A.T) hotmail . co m with your name and maybe a sugggestion for a present.. The deadline will be this afternoon at 5 PM...

Join in to hear some original Dutch Sinterklaas music! and maybe see Sinterklaas himself.. (Who knows).. You will receive the other's person name before 6 PM. The celebration itself will take place tomorrow evening!! (wednesday)

Have Fun!

Driving Test

Indian drivers are known for their passionate distaste of traffic rules, liberal usage of the horn, and uncanny maneuvering abilities. They are also required to pass a rigorous written examination if they wish to obtain an authentic driving license. As a frequent “joy-walker” I must also be aware of proper road regulations. The top ten excerpts from the state of Karnataka’s practice test:

12. Which lane must you be in while making a right turn:-
a. any lane.
b. extreme left lane.
c. extreme right lane.

28. Before leaving a vehicle parked, you should:-
a. Turn the ignition key off.
b. Stop the engine, lock the ignition, remove the key, and set the hand brake.
c. Look the car.

56. Over speeding or dangerous driving:-
a. Attracts strict warning from the authorities.
b. Is an invitation to accident.
c. Is an offence and is punishable under the law.

72. A pedestrian is crossing the street at an intersection in an unmarked cross walk, you should:-
a. Yield or give the pedestrian the “right-of-way’.
b. Proceed with care as pedestrian is ‘joy-walking’.
c. Reduce speed and warn pedestrian.

87. When the Motor Vehicle Inspector demands any information:-
a. Not obligatory to furnish it.
b. It is obligatory to furnish it.
c. He can refuse.

102. Why do we have speed limits?
a. To keep the traffic within a safe speed for existing condition.
b. More vehicles can be used on roads.
c. Authority can identify who is speeding.

106. When you approach a barrier, it is:-
a. Obligatory to stop the vehicle.
b. Mandatory to stop the vehicle.
c. Caution to stop the vehicle

116. When a cow is standing across the road:-
a. As to and wait until it clears the road.
b. Pass if from front.
c. Pass it from behind.

134. A driver shall drive in ‘one way’:-
a. Always in the direction specified by sign board.
b. Reverse direction in emergencies.
c. Both ways on Sundays.

136. If you are fined for any traffic violations you must feel:-
a. Proud.
b. Humiliated.
c. To correct your attitude in future.

Answers: 12. (c), 28. (b), 56. (c), 72. (a), 87. (b), 102. (a), 106. (c), 116. (c), 134. (a), 136. (c)

The complete practice exam can be found on Karnataka’s Road Transport Office website.

Hmmm... not much going on here... )c:

I hope The House itself is more lively than it´s Blog!
Guys, come on: don´t be that lazy, write something - even if it´s only the usual bullshit that´s going on in the house! *grin*

So, just to give you a reason to DO (i.e. write) something:

How are you all? Who moved out after I left, who´s still living in The House?

How´s Murthy? Of course I hope the answer will be "not around anymore", but I have my doubts about that... ;o) And what about our cleaning ladies?
